Are there differences between steam cleaning carpet or using hot water extraction method? Consumers often use these two terms interchangeably. However, there are differences between these two carpet cleaning methods.

Steam is made when water is heated to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Hot water extraction method heats water to 212 degrees, making steaming hot water that sanitizes surfaces. In hot water extraction method, all the water has not been converted into hot gas vapor. Steam carpet cleaning method gets water hotter and converts it all into steam so less water is used. However, steam cleaning does not rinse or remove dirt & stains as effectively as hot water extraction carpet cleaning does.

Do you take a steam bath (sauna) or a shower bath to wash your body? Steam is great for some things, but steam does not clean the outside of our bodies well. Steam is great for sanitizing dishes AFTER the cleansing wash cycle. Similarly, using steam instead of a hot water bath will not give the best results on carpeting.  Using hot water extraction method, which is the method most recommended by carpet manufacturers, bathes carpet fibers in hot water and cleaning solution. It rinses the fibers, pulls the fibers back up, and removes stains and dirt while extracting dirty rinse water and cleaning solution. This leaves carpets fresh, clean, sanitized, and deodorized. Depending upon air temperature, air circulation and humidity, carpets dry within 2-4 hours using hot water extraction.
